Gold defiant despite difficult day

Bank of Scotland Premier League executive chairman Lex Gold has defiantly declared he has no intention of resigning after another controversial day at the office.

Bank of Scotland Premier League executive chairman Lex Gold has defiantly declared he has no intention of resigning after another controversial day at the office.

On a day when the Scottish Football Association launched a £31.1m (€46.6m) plan to save Scottish football, the SPL plunged the game into more disarray.

Having knocked back Falkirk’s proposals to groundshare last season, they have given the go-ahead for Hearts to move to Murrayfield, Dundee and Dundee United to share at Tannadice, Bell’s First Division leaders Clyde to play at Kilmarnock and Falkirk at Dunfermline.

But the SPL chief has vowed not to walk away from a challenge for the time being.

“I have no intention of resigning at this point,” said Gold. “But I have indicated to the board that they get a successor.

“I am not going away from the challenge, far from it. My resignation is not imminent.”

The SPL approved the contentious proposals put forward by Hearts, the two Dundee clubs, Falkirk and Clyde to groundshare next season.

Hearts were looking to play at Murrayfield to cut mounting debts and that was agreed in principal this afternoon by the top flight clubs.

The option for Dundee United and Dundee to play at Tannadice next season was also given the green light.

But, although Clyde and Inverness were declined more time to meet the SPL’s stadium criteria, the Bully Wee were allowed to play their games in Ayrshire if promoted.

If Falkirk top the Bell’s First Division at the end of the season, they would be allowed promotion as their proposal to share with Dunfermline also got the green light.

The decision is likely to anger SPL bottom club Partick, who were told they had to meet the stadia requirements for promotion and now face the drop.

A statement read: “The following decision regarding stadia proposals that the SPL received from various clubs were made at today’s SPL general meeting.

“Approval was given to Heart of Midlothian’s application to groundshare at Murrayfield for season 2004/05 subject to a legally-binding contract being in place between Heart of Midlothian and the SRU by May 30.

“It was agreed that Dundee could use Tannadice Park as their registered ground for season 2004/05 subject to a legally binding contract being in place between Dundee and Dundee United by May 30.

“In addition to this, if Dens Park comes under new ownership, Dundee would be given approval to remain at Dens Park again subject to a contract being in position by May 30.

“Falkirk’s proposal to groundshare with Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park if promoted to the SPL for season 2004/05 was also approved.

“Once again this is subject to a legally binding contract being in place between Falkirk and Dunfermline Athletic by May 30.

“Applications from Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Clyde for a period of grace to meet the SPL’s stadia criteria were declined.

“Clyde also applied for approval for a groundsharing arrangement with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

“This was approved by the SPL subject to a legally binding contract between Clyde and Kilmarnock being in place by May 30.”

Gold added: “Each vote got sufficient votes to go through.

“I don’t say what the voting is at the SPL general meetings or in board meetings but all applications exceeded that number of eight.

“In every case, the required legally binding contract is subject to verification and approval by the SPL.

“Clubs are only allowed one register ground in any one season. All groundsharing arrangements that were approved will therefore apply for the entirety of season 1004/05.

“Dundee’s application for a waiver in relation to undersoil heating was declined.”

Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston, who has allowed the Bairns to share the plastic pitch at East End Park next season, also confirmed the SPL clubs were going ahead with the Setanta television deal.

“As far as I’m aware we are processing with that one. I think everybody that was at the meeting was satisfied and that’s what we are going for.”
