Bayern rule out Lehmann swoop

Bayern Munich have ruled out a summer move for Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Bayern Munich have ruled out a summer move for Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

The veteran German has lost his place as number one at Emirates Stadium to Manuel Almunia, but turned down a loan move to former club Borussia Dortmund this month.

Lehmann, 38, will be a free agent at the end of the season when his current contract expires, and has indicated he could contemplate retirement after Euro 2008.

However, with Oliver Kahn set to hang up his gloves in the summer, reports in Germany suggested Bayern would move for Lehmann, but general manager Uli Hoeness maintains Michael Rensing will be given his chance.

“We have promised Michael over and over again that he would be our first choice when Oliver Kahn retires,” Hoeness told German television channel DSF.

“It would be relatively senseless to replace one 38-year-old with another - besides Lehmann is not the sort of player to sit on the bench waiting for Michael to get ill or injured.”
