Nigel Owens wows Dublin pub with rendition of The Fields of Athenry

By Stephen Barry

Nigel Owens may not always please the home crowd, but that's exactly what he did in a Dublin pub on Sunday.

The popular referee is known for his on-field quips and off-field honesty, but he showed a fine singing voice when taking the mic in Cassidy's Bar.

The Welsh whistler was enjoying the craic with some players, including injured Leinster star Sean O'Brien, according to reports, after the province qualified for the Champions Cup final.

He was asked to take centre-stage, however, when requested to sing a song with house band Rake The Ashes.

To the enjoyment of the crowd, Owens sang The Black Velvet Band and an operatic Welsh song, before bringing the house down with his rendition of Irish rugby anthem The Fields of Athenry.

"Well this is one of the best live bands I've heard," wrote Owens on Twitter.

"Great night in Dublin listening to the Rake The Ashes in Cassidys Bar in Dublin! Big thanks to Chris O'Donnell for letting me join them for a song too."

Rake The Ashes are no strangers to welcoming sports-star guests to the stage, having played Joxer Goes to Stuttgart with Robbie Keane last year.
