Leinster door always open for Gleeson, says Cheika

He may be returning to Australia at the end of the year with his wife Fiona, but coach Michael Cheika says the door will always be open for Keith Gleeson to resume his Leinster career.

He may be returning to Australia at the end of the year with his wife Fiona, but coach Michael Cheika says the door will always be open for Keith Gleeson to resume his Leinster career.

Describing Gleeson's decision to retire at the end of the season as "premature", Cheika says the wing forward's curtailed progress with Ireland has always been "to Leinster's gain".

Born in Ireland, Gleeson moved to Australia at the age of seven, returning in 2001 to impose himself amongst Leinster's back-row, making his debut in a Celtic League win over Glasgow.

He has been a stalwart with Leinster ever since, lining out 43 times in the Heineken Cup.

Injury has hampered his international progress with Ireland - he has clocked up 27 caps and an impressive five tries since his debut in 2002, and Michael Cheika says he has been an underused national resource ever since.
