IRFU can’t prevent 'Ireland Rugby Shirt' being sold in aid of British soldiers

A green jersey bearing a shamrock logo is being sold in support of British military charity ‘Help for Heroes’.

The charity, whose slogan is ‘Support for our Wounded’ runs recovery centres and provides individual support for British soldiers.

The jersey in support of the charity is being sold online by Lovell Rugby.

Described as a ‘Help for Heroes Ireland Rugby Shirt’ the green jersey has a white collar and shamrock logo and is being sold for £34.99 (€48).

The website reads: “The famed green look needs no introduction and is joined by white beneath the arms and around the collar/neckline.

“With the Help For Heroes charity prominently stitched across the chest, Ireland's shamrock shield is embroidered aside the buttoned neckline.”

10% from the sale of the jersey will be contributed to 'Help for Heroes'.

The IRFU say the jersey does not carry their logo and they “cannot control” the production of all green jerseys with shamrocks.

“It is not an official IRFU jersey,” a spokesperson told the Irish Times. “All IRFU jerseys and replica kit is produced by Canterbury. They are the official suppliers for all IRFU jerseys and replica rugby kit.”

“This is not an IRFU product. It is a green jersey with a shamrock on it and we cannot control a green jersey with a shamrock on it. It doesn’t carry any IRFU logo and there’s nothing we can do about it.

“Anybody is free to make up a green jersey with a shamrock logo on it.”
