CONFIRMED: Paul O’Connell out of World Cup; to undergo surgery

The IRFU have announced that Paul O’Connell will play no further part in the Rugby World Cup, ending the player’s international career.

It seemed a virtual certainty after he was stretchered off the pitch against France with a suspected torn hamstring and a statement issued in the past few minutes confirmed the news.

It said: “Paul O'Connell suffered a significant hamstring injury and will undergo surgery this week.

“Paul will not play again at Rugby World Cup 2015 and his time out of the game will depend on the outcome of the surgery.”

It brings the curtain down on O’Connell’s 13-year international career, that saw him win 108 caps and lead Ireland to Six Nations glory.

The statement also said that Leinster lock Mike McCarthy has been called up to the Ireland squad in place of O'Connell.

McCarthy is currently en route to Cardiff to join up with the rest of the squad.
