In the run-up to the World Cup, Three Ireland filmed a series of clips with Paul O’Connell, Johnny Sexton and Robbie Henshaw.
They were supposed to be a nice insight into life in the training camp, and a chance to hear the personal views of these guys we usually only see on the rugby pitch.
But, given the events of the past week, the latest release is unexpectedly poignant.
In the video, O’Connell congratulates Henshaw on being a young player and having a long career ahead of him.
Teammate Sexton describes his captain’s immeasurable contribution to the team, before O’Connell himself reflects on his career.
“It’s been an incredible journey, some incredible highs and some lows as well, with injuries” he says.
“I would have never thought I’d go on such a brilliant journey.”
Every Irish fan in the country wishes your journey could have lasted just a few games longer, Paulie.
