UK horse racing meet delayed as vets take care of unusual incident
Racing at Thirsk was delayed for almost half an hour after the veterinary team made the short journey to extricate a horse that had got stuck in its box after leaving the track.
The 4.35 race finally went off at 5.04 after the relevant emergency services were back in place after attending the incident not far from the English course.
They were called to a nearby petrol station to rescue a horse that had become trapped.
"Our veterinary team had to go and attend to a horse which had got trapped in its horse box. It was well and truly fast," said James Sanderson, racecourse manager and clerk of the course.
"It had got over a partition which wasn't designed for getting over, so all my veterinary resource was tied up with that for 25 minutes.
"Fortunately they managed to rescue the horse. I'm not a vet, but it looks to me like it's got a lot of superficial grazing and is very shocked. It has been sedated and it is back in our treatment box at our stables.
"It happened just outside. They were on their way home and had stopped at a garage, I presume, to get some fuel, and it happened on the forecourt.
"It was only about 100 metres from the racecourse, so my team went straight over."
