Twilight Payment finally has his day in the sun

Successful with Stellar Mass two years ago, Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning captured Her Majesty’s Plate for the second time in three years when 5/4 favourite Twilight Payment ran out a convincing winner of last night’s Down Royal feature.

The Godolphin-owned five-year-old, which has locked horns with top stayer Order Of St.George on many occasions, tracked front-running Light Pillar before making his move turning for home and stayed on strongly to beat market rival Laws Of Spin by three and a half lengths.

The consistent Teofilo gelding was recording his first win since landing a listed event at the Curragh in September 2016.

Winning rider Manning commented: “He seems as good as ever, sweet and enjoying his job. He has been running some great races, against some proper horses, without getting his head in front and deserved this. He got a nice lead, travelled sweet and picked up well and he certainly deserved it.”

Manning and Bolger lost out earlier when favourite Cruciatus was foiled by No Needs Never, representing Joseph and Donnacha O’Brien, in the seven-furlong two-year-old maiden.

Donnaca commented: “He’s still big and raw. Ascot came too soon for him. But he’s a nice colt and should keep improving.”

The other juvenile event on the card, the opening Magners Irish Cider Race went to the Colin Keane-ridden odds-on favourite Bailly, which confirmed Bellewstown form with Sundance Star, scoring by three-quarters of a length.

“She’s a work in progress, a project,” stated winning trainer Ger Lyons. “She’s a filly with plenty of ability and is going the right way. Five furlongs is way too sharp for her, in the long-term. The Curragh Stakes (over five furlongs on August 26) will be her next target.”

In the handicap action, Haqeeba in the colours of Newry man Maurice McCavitt, landed the five-furlong Apple Prchard Handicap in the hands of Danny Redmond and might now head to Ayr next week.

Cache Queen, ridden for Ado McGuinness by in-form Ronan Whelan, followed-up last week’s success in Killarney by landing the finale the Magners Outcider handicap.

Meanwhile, in Wexford, the three-mile Maggie May’s Pub Handicap Hurdle produced a fortunate win for local hope Lady Of The Sea, owned by her breeder Jim Mernagh, trained by Paul Nolan and ridden to victory by Bryan Cooper.

But the mare was a lucky scorer as Epsilon Indi (Danny Mullins) was clear, having made all, when crashing at the final flight.

Cooper completed a double when Matin D’anjou made all to land the Ferrybank Opel Beginners Chase at the expense of odds-on favourite Judgement Day.

And he did so in difficult circumstances as his saddle slipped with a circuit to race, before holding Rachael Blackmore’s mount by three-quarters of a length.

Willie and Patrick Mullins struck in another bumper when debutante Shush, a five-year-old daughter of Flemensfirth, justified even-money favouritism in the finale, beating So Lonely by six and a half lengths, prompting her rider to comment:

“She’s a nice mare, but was very green out there, so there should be plenty of improvement to come.”

Henry de Bromhead continued his superb form when Show And Go (Dylan Robinson) made most of the running to record an easy success in the Adare Manor Opportunity handicap.

Play The Part, described by his trainer Mark Roper as “a moody character”, made all under 7lb. claimer Cathal Landers for an emphatic, ten lengths win over Loughaderra Flame in the opening Liam Leacy Plumbing & Heating Ltd Maiden Hurdle.

*Jack Kennedy picked-up a three-day whip ban following his handling of Soul Kaliber in the handicap chase won by Da Baba Elephant.

*In-form brothers Dan and Harry Skelton were the punters’ friends on Ladies Day at Uttoxeter as they stole the show with a 34-1 four-timer.

The combination have been setting a tremendous pace since day one of the new jumps season, with Harry well clear in the jockeys’ championship on 68 winners and Dan now on 70 winners and heading the trainers’ title race on prize-money, with £558,000 already in the bank.
