Carlos Moya continued his fine form of 2002 to sweep past Dick Norman and into the second round of the Australian Open.
The tournament's fifth seed, who was runner-up here in 1997, beat Belgian Norman 7-5 6-3 6-4 in under two hours.
Moya returned to the world's top 10 for the first time in three years last season after winning four titles, including the Masters Series event in Cincinnati.
But he has a mixed record at Melbourne Park, with a quarter-final appearance in 2001 followed by a second-round exit to Rainer Schuttler last year.
His first serve was faulty, landing only 53%, and he could have been more ruthless on the break points, where he converted only four from 11.
