No fairytale for Phil Mickelson's 100th major as he misses cut

Phil Mickelson's 100th major appearance ended with a far more disappointing statistic as the five-time major winner suffered an early exit at Quail Hollow.

After an opening 79 which was his highest score ever in the US PGA Championship, Mickelson could only add a second round of 74 to finish 11 over par and miss the cut for just the second time in 25 starts in the year's final major.

The 47-year-old has not won since the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield, which left him needing victory in the US Open to complete a career grand slam.

"It's not like I'm hitting the ball crooked, I'm just hitting it in the wrong spots," Mickelson said after taking until his 31st hole of the week to register a birdie.

"I'm not real focused out there. I'm having a tough time visualising the shot. I'm having a tough time controlling my thoughts and not letting it wander to what I don't want to have happen.

"On the range I'm having some of the best sessions, swinging the club fine, striking it pretty good and yet I'm not controlling my thought process out there."

Mickelson surprisingly split from his caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay earlier this season after 25 years together, but was quick to make light of his current poor form.

"It's been two majors," added the left-hander, who missed the cut in the Open at Royal Birkdale. "I've played fine this year. I made every cut up to the British. Just been these last two majors."
