Looks like Conor McGregor will get his chance to be a double champion

Comments made by UFC boss Dana White last night suggest Conor McGregor may get the chance to realise his ultimate ambition.

After becoming featherweight champion in December, the Dublin fighter has said his next goal is to hold two UFC titles simultaneously.

In addition to holding the featherweight (145lbs) title he would also like a shot at the lightweight title (155lbs).

It has never been done in the UFC, but McGregor thrives on breaking new ground and White is open to letting him try.

“Conor has said he would like to win the 155-pound belt and fight four times a year and defend both belts,” White said on UFC Tonight.

“If anybody can do it, Conor McGregor can. This guy has done pretty much everything he said he would do, so I'm interested.”

Normally if a fighter moves up a weight class they would be expected to relinquish their belt from the lower-weight, but the UFC appear willing to overlook that in the case of their Irish superstar.

“That is true, normally I would say if you're going to move up in weight you're going to have to give up the belt,” White said. “But Conor has done everything he said he would do.

“He wants to fight, he really likes money, so if anybody could do it, it's probably him.”

McGregor's coach John Kavanagh has also recently supported the idea of a lightweight fight next, as he believes it would benefit the fighter to get a break from having to make the 145lb weight.

Conor McGregor, dual UFC Champion. It’s got quite a ring to it.
