Grumeti is in line to run at Goodwood on Saturday week so as to confirm his participation at Royal Ascot.
Trainer Alan King hopes to confirm the versatile four-year-old for the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at the Royal meeting, but is wary of missing the cut.
Grumeti will therefore head to Goodwood for the Brighton Argus Handicap with the aim of rising through the weights.
King said: “The handicapper put Grumeti up 6lb to a mark of 89, but that would still not make him a certainty to get in at the Royal meeting.
“I looked up last year’s Duke of Edinburgh and the last horse to make the cut was rated 91, so if runs well at Goodwood he might climb up the ratings sufficiently to get a run at Ascot.
“However, I would hate to let this Goodwood race pass us by so as to wait for Ascot and then find that we do not get in,” the Barbury Castle handler told www.alankingracing.co.uk.
Grumeti made a victorious return to the Flat earlier this month at Ascot, having won the Grade One 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree on his penultimate outing in April.
He also finished third in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
