Eddery handed training go-ahead

Pat Eddery is itching to get started on his new career after being granted a training licence by the Jockey Club.

The 11-times champion jockey announced his intention to join the training ranks earlier in the year and after completing the various courses, he is now a fully-fledged handler.

Eddery, who will be operating from Musk Hill near Aylesbury, already has 30 horses in his care and he is hoping to expand that in time.

“I’m delighted it’s all gone through. I’m really looking forward to it and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

“I’ve got about 30 horses in at the moment and we are hoping to get 40 in the end. We have a fair mix of horses – we’ve got a few four and three-year-olds, some maidens and a lot of yearlings for next season.”

The 53-year-old quit the saddle in 2003 after a riding career that saw him notch three Derby winners among numerous other Classic successes.

Eddery is yet to decide which of his inmates will be the first runner to carry the flag but he believes a fraction of his riding success would equal a memorable training career.

“I haven’t organised my first runner yet, I’ve just been waiting for the licence to come through so I will make a decision in the next couple of weeks,” he added.

“We are going well and we just need a bit of luck now. If I could achieve half of what I did as a rider, it would be fantastic.”

After retiring from the saddle, Eddery fronted Pat Eddery Racing, a group of ownership syndicates which he will also be training for in the coming season.

“We are looking forward to training for all of those owners as they have been so supportive and hopefully we can train a winner or two for them,” he said.

“I haven’t bred many of the horses we have but I’ve bought quite a lot of them and we hope it all goes well now.”
