Still fresh from his victory over nine time World Champion Phil Taylor last night, Painter took to the oche brimming with confidence.

He began the match as he meant to go on with a straight 3 - 0 win in the first set. Burnett was visibly rattled and after Painter had taken the next leg with a 140 out, missed seven darts at the double to hand Kevin a two leg advantage.

Burnett could only stand aside and watch whilst his dream of winning another world title were pushed aside when Painter sent in thundering cover shots and finishes to win the match.

World Grand Prix to beat Steve Beaton 3 - 1.

Lowe made two successful attempts at Double tops to win the first set for the Chesterfield veteran. The 56-year-old also won the second set but Beaton won the next to level the match and then moved ahead for the first time by scoring 100 check out.

Lowe responded with a double finish and put himself firmly into the driving seat. Beaton proved against Baxter last night that he was a fighter but he found it difficult against Lowe who used his cool head to keep ahead.

'The Bronze Adonis' won the next 2 legs and although Lowe claimed the first it was Beaton who registered a brilliant 155 checkout to win the set.

Old Stoneface regained the initiative at the start of the fourth set but Beaton certainly did not give up easily and matched three times world champion

by taking the next.

After winning the third leg Lowe missed doubles for the match but Beaton failed to capitalise and Lowe sealed victory with his next attempt at the double.

Lowe who will now face Martin Adams in the last eight, was delighted with his performance and said: " I started well and finished well. I had to

get in front of him even when he finished his leg. Tonight I played my

game. I was getting off well every time and that put him under serious

pressure.

"Whatever he did I matched him and I honestly believe that Steve Beaton was playing me, I was not playing Steve Beaton."

Lancaster's Alan Warriner also came through a tough match against Shayne Burgess to march on to the Quarterfinals. Installed as favourite for the tournament given the defeat of Taylor last night, Warriner was pushed all the way.

'The Iceman' went off at a sprint and left Burgess behind. Burgess put up a good fight but Warriner was hitting some irresistible doubles and sensing that the match was his for the taking, moved up a gear to take the match 3 - 1.

Dennis Smith completed the line up for the Quarterfinals with a comprehensive victory over Keith Deller. 'Smiffy' who was in rip roaring form at the World Matchplay, found Deller far from at his best and had no hesitation in capitalising. Dennis did not have to stretch himself but he will need to step up a gear for his match against the ebullient Kevin Painter tomorrow.
