Conquest set for Curragh challenge

Casual Conquest, third in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom earlier in the month, is on course to reappear in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh on Sunday week.

Dermot Weld’s son of Hernando was having just his third career start when finding only New Approach and Tartan Bearer too strong in the 12-furlong Classic.

Prior to that fine run, Casual Conquest won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial by an impressive six lengths.

Weld said: “We’re satisfied with him and he’s all set for Sunday week and the Irish Derby.”

New Approach is the current favourite to add to his Classic haul and trainer Jim Bolger reports his charge to be in great shape.

Bolger said: “He’s very well and we were happy with the way he came out of the race over the next three or four days. He seems fresh and well.”

Doctor Fremantle, who finished fourth at Epsom for Sir Michael Stoute, is another possible.

However, the Grand Prix de Paris at Chantilly on July 14, sponsored by owner Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farm Stud, is another alternative.

“Dr Fremantle may go for the Grand Prix de Paris, but he’s also in the Irish Derby,” said Stoute.
