Connacht sign Munster back-row Robin Copeland

Connacht have announced the signing of Munster back-row Robin Copeland, writes Stephen Barry.

The Wexford-native, who has one Ireland cap, will join the Westerners on a two-year contract.

Copeland's end-of-season departure from Munster was announced last week. He has played 62 times, scoring 11 tries, since joining in 2014.

He was the province's man-of-the-match in the historic win against the Maori All Blacks in November 2016 and helped Munster A to the British & Irish Cup title last year.

The 30-year-old has previously represented Plymouth Albion, Rotherham Titans and Cardiff Blues.

“I have really enjoyed my four seasons with Munster and I would really like to thank everyone for my time there,” said Copeland.

“I am now looking forward to the next challenge and an exciting future with Connacht.

“I have been really impressed with what has been achieved in Connacht and I am determined to be part of further success there.

“The club is well known for the importance it places on community and I look forward to representing them when I join up with the squad next season.”

Speaking about Copeland’s departure last week, Munster head coach Johann van Graan said: “While it has been great to retain so many of our players this season, we respect Robin’s decision to move on.

“A physical and versatile player, we know he will continue to be successful, and everyone at Munster wishes Robin all the best for the future.”

Connacht Rugby CEO Willie Ruane said Copeland had been “on our radar for quite a while” and will bring “incredible athletic ability and rugby experience to our squad”.
