Athletics: Sonia may miss World Championships

Sonia O'Sullivan's participation in the world track and field championships in Edmonton in Canada this summer could be in doubt.

Sonia O'Sullivan's participation in the world track and field championships in Edmonton in Canada this summer could be in doubt.

The Olympic silver medallist said in Dublin this evening that she would be skipping a number of major events between now and the 2004 Athens Olympics, as the Hellanic Games in three years' time are now her main aim.

O'Sullivan confirmed earlier today that she will be running once more this year in the Dublin women's mini-marathon on June 4th, and in the Ballycotton Ten on June 10th - though that appears to have been arranged by her sponsors Nike, who also sponsor the Irish equivalent of the Great North Run.

She also confirmed she would not be running in the Cork City Sports this summer - a major blow to organisers down Leeside.
