No regrets for kidney donor Brolly

Joe Brolly has said that he never gave a second thought to donating one of his kidneys to his friend.

The former Derry footballer gave his kidney to Shane Finnegan just over a month ago, sparking an increased public interest in the living donor programme.

This year will see a record high in the number of people donating organs to family members and friends, with 32 living donor transplants set to be completed by the end of December.

Joe Brolly's donation to his friend ultimately failed, but he said he would do it again in the morning.

"I can tell you, and this is from the perspective of a failed donation, it's a sort of tragic achievement, but it’s a great thing, it's all good," he said.

"I would do it again tomorrow. If there's anyone out there who is moderately healthy, between the age of 18 and 55, who would be interested in doing it - it’s a all good, it's a great thing from every perspective. It's very, very life-affirming."
