UL and Kerry advance in Waterford Crystal Cup

UL and Kerry advanced to the quarter-finals of the Waterford Crystal Cup following wins over Waterford and IT Tralee respectively this afternoon.

Fitzgibbon Cup contenders UL were impressive as they recorded a 1-20 to 0-18 win over Waterford at WIT Sports Campus in Carrignore.

In cold conditions, life post the decision of John Mullane to retire from inter-county action with the Deise didn't get any easier, as Michael Ryan's side came out the wrong end of a five-point result.

However, the hosts were impressive in the opening stages and led by 0-5 to 0-4 at the end of the opening quarter, with five different scorers for the hosts.

Shane Walsh, Jake Dillon, Richie Foley, Jamie Barron and Shane O'Sullivan claimed points for wind assisted Waterford inside the opening 17 minutes.

Waterford native Eamon Murphy had registered two points for the students at that stage, with Adrian Ryan and Kieran Morris also claiming UL scores.

A 30th minute goal from Tipperary's Paul Kelly saw UL bounce back, with the sides level at 1-8 to 0-11 at the interval.

Morris continued to impress for the students, with crucial scores late on from Tommy Heffernan, Conor Ryan and Brian Stapleton helping to book a quarter-final date against Clare next weekend.

Kerry were ruthless as a sextet of goals helped them to a 23-point win over IT Tralee, on a 6-17 to 0-12 score-line at Abbeydorney.

New Kerry hurling manager Tom Howard made one change to his starting 15 from the team announced midweek, with Padraig Boyle coming into the side in place of his fellow Ballyduff clubman Pat Joe Connolly at right-half-forward.

Former Kilkenny player Willie O'Dwyer was among the Kingdom attack, and the All-Ireland medallists winning mentality certainly rubbed off on his Kerry colleagues, as they set the ground running from the off.

The first of two Shane Nolan goals in the first half gave the hosts a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after just two minutes.

Nolan's second, coupled with a Daniel Collins brace of three-pointers ensured a 4-6 to 0-9 lead at the break.

Kerry failed to ease up on the restart, and held the students to just three points in the closing 35 minutes, as they smashed home two further goals with Sean Maunsell and Brendan O'Leary on target.
