Mulholland shuffles pack for Armagh clash

Galway manager Alan Mulholland has made switches in defence and attack for tomorrow's All-Ireland SFC third round qualifier against Armagh at Pearse Stadium (throw-in 5pm).

Donal O'Neill and Keith Kelly come into the full-back line alongside team captain Finian Hanley, whose presence at the edge of the square was much needed during the recent narrow wins over Division 4 sides Tipperary and Waterford.

The 6ft 5in Tom Flynn, a former winner of the Cabury Hero of the Future award, comes in to partner Paul Conroy in centre-field with Greg Higgins making way.

Flynn replaced Higgins for the closing 20 minutes of the Tribesmen's 1-12 to 0-14 defeat of Waterford two weeks ago.

Michael Farragher has been ruled out with a calf injury, but John O'Brien is fit to start on the 40 with Milltown talent Michael Martin recalled to the full-forward line at the expense of Mark Hehir.

Mulholland's troops are under pressure to produce a much-improved display in Salthill and they will need to if they are to get a result against a free-scoring Armagh outfit.

"I know we mightn't have been that impressive in our games against Tipperary and Waterford, but those matches in their own way were tricky assignments, and in each of them we finished well and won tight matches," Mulholland told the Connacht Tribune.

"Armagh are coming off the back of two very big wins over Wicklow and Leitrim and we know from our league meeting with them earlier this year that they are a good side that like to drive forward.

"We have to have a good think about the team we pick and the tactics we employ, but this is a home game for us and it gives us another chance to try and deliver a big display in front of our home crowd. We just have to give it a real go."

This is Galway's first Championship encounter with the Orchard men since they won a round 3 qualifier in 2001 by 0-13 to 0-12 en route to securing the All-Ireland title.

Tomorrow's victors will advance to face Cork in the fourth round.

GALWAY (SFC v Armagh): Manus Breathnach; Donal O'Neill, Finian Hanley, Keith Kelly; Johnny Duane, Gary O'Donnell, Gary Sice; Paul Conroy, Tom Flynn; John O'Brien, Sean Armstrong, Conor Doherty; Michael Martin, Michael Meehan, Danny Cummins.
