Brian McIver was last night confirmed as the new manager of the Donegal footballers, ending weeks of speculation.
The Tyrone native received the backing of the Donegal executive last Friday and his appointment to succeed Brian McEniff was approved at last night's meeting of the county board.
Bundoran hotelier McEniff stepped down from the position in July after the Tir Chonaill men lost a nail-biting qualifier to Cavan by a single point.
This is school teacher McIver's first inter-county managerial position although he did run Mickey Harte close for the Tyrone job in 2002. Earlier that year, he helped Derry side Ballinderry to the All-Ireland club title.
Donegal's 2005 season was largely disappointing and McIver's first task next year will be to earn promotion back to the National League's Division One.
He may also try to coax star forward Brendan Devenney out of his recent decision to retire from the inter-county scene at the age of 29.
