James McClean made a great gesture of support to his local GAA club
Ireland international James McClean has always made it clear he is very proud of his Derry roots and has proven it once more with a very generous gesture.
The winger, who plays professionally for Premier League side West Brom, is sponsoring a new kit for Derry-based GAA club Sean Dolans GAC.
"James McClean, a true son of Creggan, has agreed to sponsor a new senior rig for Sean Dolans," club member Danny Cassidy told the Derry Daily.
"James is a credit to the Creggan area and is a real friend of Sean Dolans GAC."
The Sean Dolan’s clubhouse was destroyed by fire in December 2011 and the community have been working to restore the club ever since.
Cassidy added: "It makes our task of rebuilding the club a hell of a lot easier when we have the likes of James to support us."
Cassidy hopes McClean will be able to go to Derry for an official presentation: "Hopefully, when we get the rig James will present it to the Senior team".
A club spokesperson confirmed the news.
"The club would like to thank former Sean Dolans player and West Brom and Ireland winger James McClean for offering to sponsor a new team kit for the senior team," they said.
"Fair play James for not forgetting your roots and thanks very much."
McClean has been at the centre of controversy in the past, for refusing to wear the British Remembrance poppy and appearing to turn his back on a rendition of the English national anthem.
The player will be delighted to be back in the news for such a positive reason, particularly as he this afternoon celebrates the birth of his second child.
