GPA monthly honours for Larkin and Cavanagh

Kilkenny hurler Eoin Larkin and Tyrone footballer Sean Cavanagh have been announced today as the Opel Gaelic Players of the Month award winners for September.

Kilkenny hurler Eoin Larkin and Tyrone footballer Sean Cavanagh have been announced today as the Opel Gaelic Players of the Month award winners for September.

Larkin, the 23-year-old forward, was in inspirational form during Kilkenny's successful All-Ireland campaign.

He scored 1-4 in the Cats' final victory over Waterford earlier this month, which gave Brian Cody's men the much-coveted three-in-a-row.

Larkin, a very deserving winner of the GPA gong, hails from the James Stephens club and is a soldier in the Irish Army.

Last week he was nominated for a position on the 2008 All-Star team and last night he was shortlisted for the Hurler of the Year award.

Meanwhile, midfielder-turned-full-forward Cavanagh was arguably the heartbeat of the Tyrone side this season.

The Moy clubman landed five points from play in the Red Hands' All-Ireland final triumph over defending champions Kerry, winning the man-of-the-match award in the process.

Cavanagh was this week named as the Ireland captain for next month's International Rules Series against Australia.

The 25-year-old accountant is also in the running to win his fourth All-Star award and to be named Footballer of the Year.
