Gavin chosen to referee hurling final

Offaly's Brian Gavin has been chosen to referee his second All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final in three years, following the GAA's announcement of the match officials for next month's senior and minor deciders.

Gavin will be the man in the middle when Clare and Cork meet in the all-Munster contest at Croke Park on Sunday, September 8, while the All-Ireland MHC final between Galway and Waterford will be refereed by Cathal McAllister from Cork.

Gavin, who is attached to the Clara club, was in charge of Clare's recent All-Ireland quarter-final win over Galway.

Earlier in the summer, he refereed the Munster Championship meeting of Limerick and Tipperary.

He was the referee for the 2011 All-Ireland senior final between Kilkenny and Tipperary, and his inter-county refereeing CV also includes the 2004 All-Ireland minor final and the All-Ireland U-21 decider two years later.

Westmeath's James McGrath will be the stand-by referee for the senior game on Sunday week with Johnny Ryan (Tipperary) as the other linesman and James Owens from Wexford on sideline official duty.

Meanwhile, minor final referee McAllister is a member of the Aghada club in Cork and also has previous All-Ireland final experience having refereed the All-Ireland minor final in 2009 and also the All-Ireland Club SHC final in 2010.

Limerick official Shane Hourigan will be McAllister's stand-by referee on the day, the other linesman is Eamonn Hassan (Derry) and the sideline official will be David Copps from Cork.
