Galway hurling legend Conor Hayes has been appointed manager of the county's senior team following a vote at a County Board meeting last night.

Galway hurling legend Conor Hayes has been appointed manager of the county's senior team following a vote at a County Board meeting last night.

Hayes received 28 votes, compared to 12 for his predecessor Noel Lane, 10 for Brendan Lynskey and five for Gerry Fahy.

The former full-back, who won All-Ireland medals with Galway in 1980, 1987 and 1988, has been given two years to return the team to winning form.

They last won an All-Ireland under Hayes' captaincy in 1988.
