Cody plays down touchline spat

Kilkenny boss Brian Cody played down his touchline spat with a Tipperary official following his side’s Allianz Hurling League final victory.

Cody made his way to the Tipperary dugout to remonstrate with a Premier County board delegate as tempers rose during the first half of a memorable tussle.

Cody smiled: “I think I made a mistake in which bench I was at. That happens. We're neighbouring counties, you know?

“Who knows what can happen? These things happen. It was a great day like, it was a great day's hurling and a great day's passion for the whole thing and long may it last.”

Cody hailed the huge intensity levels on show and insisted that “the desire” from both camps was something to behold.

He said: “The match summed it up. The game took place on the field and nowhere else really and the desire from both sets of players and both sets of management and selectors was complete and it'd be a sad story if it weren't.”

Cody appeared to react to something that was said on the Tipp bench but when asked if this was so, he neatly dodged the issue.

Cody said: “Everything that happened on the pitch today was terrific.

There was times we didn't do everything we wanted to do and there was times we did things very, very well and we'll continue to try and do that.”

Cody described the fare on the field of play as “really serious” and “a great game.”

He added: “It was just mad stuff. We started off quickly. And they got back into it and then it dropped a bit and then we got back into it and then they got on top.

“Then the second half was seesaw stuff. Obviously it went to extra-time and it just kept going. Obviously we won with the last puck of the game. “It was a very good point. That was it.”

And Cody warned that Kilkenny are in a better place than 12 months ago – when they also beat Tipperary in the League decider.

He explained: “We won last year and we didn’t perform particularly well in many of the matches. I would say overall, we’ve been better but as well as that, we’ve exhausted the panel fairly much.

“The reality is, we’re delighted to win this but it has no bearing on the respective strength of the team for the championship except to say that right now, we’re happy with where we are,” said the Kilkenny manager.
