Over 1,700 spectators watched on as Clare claimed the Waterford Crystal Cup title thanks to an eight-point victory over Tipperary at Semple Stadium, Thurles tonight.

Davy Fitzgerald's charges captured only their second title, and a first since 2009 in impressive fashion with Tipperary reduced to 14 men late on following the dismissal of Conor O'Brien on a second yellow card.

The sides were tied on three occasions inside the opening 11 minutes, including at 0-4 each following an Eoin Kelly score.

Although Tony Kelly pushed the visitors ahead from the resulting puck-out, a 12th minute goal from Patrick 'Bonnar' Maher gave Tipperary a hard-earned lead.

Maher's goal helped the Premier County edge the lead until the 22nd minute, but Clare worked hard with Colin Ryan impressive from placed balls.

Scores from Enda Barrett and Alan O'Neill helped tie the contest, before a 23rd minute Tony Kelly point gave Clare a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Ryan and Kelly impressed before the break for the Banner County as Clare led by 0-14 to 1-8 at half-time.

Eoin Kelly done his utmost to keep Tipperary in touch, but Clare further extended their lead on the restart.

Points from Shane O'Donnell and Colin Ryan opened up a five-point lead and although Kelly and Seamus Callanan tried hard for Tipperary, Clare continued to stay on top.

Free-taker Ryan was in superb form, with a 51st minute goal from Shane O'Donnell giving Clare an eight-point cushion as the final quarter approached.

Eoin Kelly cut the deficit for Tipperary with 14 minutes remaining, but Clare finished with two of the final three points, with the dismissal of Conor O'Brien on a second yellow card a huge blow for the hosts in the final quarter.
