Carlow will have to make do without one of their star men as they prepare to build on their historic league campaign.

Midfielder Brendan Murphy will miss the Championship as he is moving to the US this summer.

Having played a leading role in their three wins last summer and subsequent promotion from Divison 4 of the League, Murphy will be a significant loss.

The 29-year-old previously spent two years playing Aussie Rules football with Sydney Swans, before turning down a contract extension.

"It's disappointing but we understand the situation he is in. We wish him the best of luck," Carlow manager Turlough O'Brien told the Irish Independent.

Murphy will transfer to a US club for the summer.

"(There's) no question about his commitment to Carlow," added O'Brien.

"It's a personal decision. The rule book doesn't allow for that. Smaller counties are probably affected more than the larger counties."

Carlow will play Louth in the first round of the Leinster Championship in less than three weeks time.
