DRAMA: Shetland (BBC One, 9pm-10pm)

Features a great cast, crime drama ‘Shetland’ is based on novels by best-selling author Ann Cleeves and is back because the first series was so darn good.

Douglas Henshall is back for the new run as DI Jimmy Perez, and the opening instalment, Raven Black, guest stars Scottish stalwart Brian Cox as local recluse Magnus Bain.

“He’s a very simple man, a man who’s lived by simple means and cut himself off from the rest of the world,” says the acclaimed actor of his character. “It’s a life he’s chosen as he’s just not sociable. Up until now, he’s been protected by his own self-imposed isolation.”

Unfortunately for Magnus, real life is about to come crashing into his world when the body of 17-year-old Catherine Ross is found on the secluded beach close to where he lives.

FILM: The Silence of the Lambs (ITV4, 10.30pm-1am)

In this Oscar-winning classic, imprisoned psychopath Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) helps rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) to create a profile of a serial killer who is preying on women, in the hope that she can stop him before he strikes again.

The word ’classic’ gets thrown about all too often, but it’s a word that is definitely appropriate to describe this nerve-jangling psychological thriller.

Hopkins delivers a career-best performance as the cannibalistic serial killer, while the plaudits should also go to Foster for being able to hold her own as a rookie FBI agent.

DOCUMENTARY: Insane Fight Club (BBC1, 11.05pm – 00.05)

The title of this documentary is rather odd for anybody unfamiliar with the premise.

A wrestling fan Mark Dallas became disillusioned with the censorship that began to limit the violence in pro wrestling, thought up the phenomenon of Insane Championship Wrestling.

This is a strictly over-18s company. In fact, people have even been thrown off balconies – this is no-holds-barred fighting, and it’s not for the faint-hearted.

In this one-off documentary, cameras follow Dallas and his team as they plan the biggest show of their lives and attempt to sell out the 1,100-capacity ABC Arena in Glasgow.

NEW ON NETFLIX: Trailer Park Boys (Seasons 1 – 7)

[comment]Warning: Foul language, NSFW[/comment]

Shot in shaky handheld video, the Canadian cult phenomenon’s mockumentary edge works perfectly with the characters of outcasts and derelicts who inhabit a fictionalized trailer park in Nova Scotia.

The edgy humour and surprising charm of this series has made it an underground hit.
