This is why Charlize Theron went brunette for the Oscars, according to her hair stylist

Perhaps the most surprising beauty story to emerge from the 2019 Oscars (apart from Jason Momoa’s pink scrunchie, which sent fans into meltdown) was the trend for brunette bobs.

Model Irina Shayk, who looked loved-up on the red carpet with boyfriend Bradley Cooper, wore her dark locks poker straight and much shorter than usual, while Emma Roberts went for a choppy centre-parted bob.

Game of Thrones Star Emilia Clarke has switched between blonde and brunette a lot throughout the years, but for the most glamorous awards event of the year she chose a very neat brown bob tucked behind her ears to go with her lavender gown.

But the most dramatic makeover was Charlize Theron. The actor’s usual long, golden waves were gone, replaced by a deep brown bob cut sharply to chin length.

Why the change? We’ve got the inside scoop from Theron’s hair stylist for the reason behind the sudden transformation.

“When I saw the beautiful light Japanese indigo fabric on her Dior dress, I immediately knew I wanted to create a dramatic contrast with her hair,” says Adir Abergel, who created the look.

“I wanted a sexy, side-swept bob that was luxurious, timeless and chic.”

As for the new hue, which was done by colourist Tracey Cunningham, Abergel wanted, “a luxe and rich shade of brown that would enhance those gorgeous blue eyes.”

He says Theron was totally on board with the idea of saying goodbye to her blonde tresses.

“Charlize is an incredible creative artist who is fearless and willing to experiment. When I presented the concept to go brunette for the Oscars, she totally trusted me,” Abergel says.

With the colour and cut done, he used the GHD Air Dryer, £99, and a round brush to create bounce and movement.

Then he straightened her hair using the GHD Platinum+ Styler, £175, to create a shiny finish.

Feeling inspired by Theron’s new ‘do and thinking of switching up your colour? Abergel says go for it: “I think what’s really beautiful is that hair is one of your greatest accessories and changing your hair colour is an amazing way to play with your look.”
