Star Wars fans look away now! Actor John Hannah reveals why he found the latest film 'tedious'

Actor John Hannah has slammed Star Wars: The Force Awakens film as “appalling” – but said he still wants a role in JJ Abrams’ sequel.

He tried to reverse the damage by hailing Abrams, who he worked with on TV show Alias, as “a proper cinematic film genius” but maintained that the Daisy Ridley-led seventh episode was “a waste of time”.

The Four Weddings and a Funeral star said: “I loved what JJ did with Star Trek, but I’m going to annoy a lot of people now and say I was appalled at Star Wars.

“It’s the same as the first one, the plot was the same, the characters were the same, the Death Star was the same except bigger, the fault they had to find was the same.

“It was tedious, it was a waste of time. I was hoping he would have done something more interesting like he did with Star Trek, I thought Star Trek was great.”

Asked if that meant he did not want a role in the box office record-breaking franchise, he laughed: “I do! I really want a role in the next Star Wars film. I didn’t say I would turn it down if I was offered it.”

One reboot Hannah has ruled himself out of is The Mummy, which he starred in as Jonathan Carnahan for three films alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Tom Cruise is taking the lead in next year’s remake, which also stars Russell Crowe and Peaky Blinders’ actress Annabelle Wallis.

He said: “It would be nice to work with Tom Cruise on a big studio picture, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t see that panning out, I’m not holding my breath.”

But he confirmed he would be back for series four of Marvel’s hit TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as scientist Holden Radcliffe.

Hannah is now busy with his new weekly radio show on digital station Mellow Magic, which airs weekends at 10am-noon.
