Singer Sinéad O’Connor has lent her support to RTÉ's 'Shine your Light' campaign to bring the Irish public together in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The campaign aims to promote solidarity among Irish people and encourages people to shine a light this Saturday, April 11 at 9pm.

President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina will take part from Áras an Uachtaráin while national and local public buildings across Ireland will shine their beacon lights too.

Irish embassies and missions around the world are participating as well.

Sinéad O’Connor said: “I'm really honoured to be taking part in this very moving event and am so inspired by the love we are all showing for each other by staying home.

"It's not easy. Especially for teenagers. But it’s really working. So let's keep it going. I'm shining my light with love for all the kids and teenagers who are currently in care and haven't been able to visit their families.”

Other public figures offering their support and taking part include Gabriel Byrne, Glen Hansard, Saoirse Ronan, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Paula Meehan and Marie Mullen.

A specials series of programming will also be broadcast on radio, television and online by RTÉ as part of the campaign which will continue until the Summer Solstice on June 21.
