A 32-year-old attempts to fool his family into believing he has won the lottery in a new TV show.

Steve Dare has taken on the challenge of conning his friends and relatives for a Sky One programme screened tomorrow night.

But it’s not all a mean trick… If the IT consultant from Romford, Essex, manages to convince his acquaintances of his new-found riches he wins them all a holiday.

Million Pound Hoax seeks to discover whether friends and relatives change their character when someone they know reaps a windfall.

Mr Dare’s family believe he is being filmed because he has scooped a new online lottery and the company behind the lottery wants to make a documentary on its first winner.

He even rings his mother, who lives in Spain, and who he hasn’t seen for four years, to tell her the “good news”. And she is flown back to England to celebrate the apparent win with her son.

Mr Dare also irritates his friends by giving them the impression that the money has gone to his head – and refusing to give them a ride in his new Ferrari.

A Sky One spokesman said: “From the moment that their ‘win’ is announced until the revelation five days later that it is a hoax, the winner must convince everyone around them that they have scooped the jackpot on a new online lottery.

“Money is not always what dreams are made of, and the dream can quickly turn into a nightmare.

“As the week progresses we see friends and family react as the person they think they know becomes obsessed with the trappings of wealth – be it dangerously fast cars or ruinously expensive clothes.”

Million Pound Hoax is broadcast on Sky One at 9pm tomorrow.
