First theatre show announced for Galway International Arts Festival

The first theatre show has been announced for this year's Galway International Arts Festival (GIAF), which runs from July 15-18.

Celebrated UK theatre company Kneehigh will return to the City of the Tribes for the festival's 42nd year with Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs), based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera.

Kneehigh's reinvention of the classic musical satire received a four star review in the UK Times and will include a mix of puppetry, physical theatre and live music as the actor- musicians perform to a live score that's described as 'trip hop combined with folk, ska with grime and dubstep'.

Written by Carl Grose and directed by Mike Shepard, with an original score by Charles Hazlewood, the theatrical performance will explore people's capacity for corruption.

Artistic Director of Galway International Arts Festival Paul Fahy said he was delighted to welcome Kneehigh back to the festival, after it's production of Tristan and Yseult back in 2017.

He said: "Following on from their 2017 sell-out success with Tristan & Yseult, Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs) is already tipped to be one of our Festival highlights. I’m looking forward to audiences experiencing the magic that is Kneehigh this July.”

The Irish premiere of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs) will take place in the Bailey Allen Hall at NUIG from July 16-20. Tickets range from €22-€29.50 and are on sale here.

The full GIAF2019 will be announced next months, but musical acts already announced for the Heineken Big Top include:
