The legal team of Ed Masry and Erin Brockovich, whose investigations into corporate toxic pollution led to the hit film Erin Brockovich, are working on another case which has aroused Hollywood’s interest.
This time the two are preparing to sue the city of Beverly Hills and three oil companies on behalf of students of Beverly Hills High School who are being treated for various forms of cancer. They claim the cancers were caused by the air pollution emanating from an oil derrick on the campus.
“The film rights are up for grabs,” Brockovich tells Daily Variety. “This is the first time we’ve had a toxic case in an affluent area.”
Julia Roberts won a Best Actress Oscar for playing Erin Brockovich in the 2001 film and her co-star Albert Finney was nominated for his performance as Masry. The film was nominated for Best Picture, but lost out to Gladiator.
