Dolores O’Riordan's family to accept special award on her behalf
The family of the late rock singer Dolores O’Riordan are to be presented with a special posthumous award on her behalf, by the University of Limerick, later this month.
The award will be presented to O’Riordan’s family on January 18th, the same day UL confers Honorary Doctorates on O’Riordan’s fellow band members in The Cranberries, including guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawlor.
The ceremony will take place at UL, three days after the first anniversary of O’Riordan’s tragic death.
The 46-year old mother of three was found dead in a bath in a hotel room at the Park Lane Hilton in London, on January 15th last year.
An inquest into her death found she had drowned in the bath while intoxicated with alcohol.
The University of Limerick will confer Honorary Doctorates on the band members of The Cranberries, Noel Hogan, Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawlor.
"A posthumous award will be made to the family of Lead Singer Dolores O’Riordan,” said a UL spokeswoman.
On Monday, January 14th, UL will confer Honourary Doctorates on humanitarian, activist, and musician Bob Geldof, as well as best-selling author Marian Keyes.
Meanwhile, it has separately been announced that a “special presentation” of music memorabilia, featuring posters and photographs of O’Riordan and The Cranberries, will be made at City Hall, Limerick, on January 14th.
The memorabilia includes a poster of one of O’Riordan’s early gigs in Limerick, as well as a black and white photograph of the band at the start of their career.
All memorabilia will hang in the office of the Mayor of Limerick, “as a symbol of the special contents of the Music Memories and Memorabilia collection”, owned by collector Nicky Woulfe.
Mr Woulfe said he is working closely with Limerick City and County Council to make the collection a permanent tourist attraction in the Treaty City.
The Cranberries, which formed in Limerick in 1989, a year prior to O’Riordan replacing lead singer Niall Quinn, quickly conquered the US market, and went on to sell over 40 million records.
