A specialist drugs court to tackle the growing drug addiction problems and associated crime in Dublin's north inner city has been launched.

A specialist drugs court to tackle the growing drug addiction problems and associated crime in Dublin's north inner city has been launched.

The courts service has set up this pilot project, which will run for 18 months.

The new court will sit every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at the Richmond Courthouse on North Brunswick Street.

This initial pilot project will be funded from existing sources and the first year will be audited for efficiency and performance.

The Court is to handle cases confined to residents of the north inner city who have drug addiction issues and are charged with a non-violent crime. They will be assigned an individual treatment programme, which will be monitored by the Court.

The aim is for each case to result in rehabilitation and eventual entry into employment or education.
