Floods and landslides have killed at least 45 people in Indonesia.

Officials say more than 5,600 families have been left homeless and thousands of hectares of rice fields have been ruined in West Java province.

Torrential rain lashed parts of the main island of Java this week causing extensive flooding.

Flash floods also hit the capital Jakarta but caused little damage.

The official Antara news agency reports the worst-hit area in West Java is Lebak district, about 6 km south of Jakarta, where a series of landslides killed 29 villagers.

"This is the first time there have been landslides here. Nobody expected them," said Endang Dakuruni, a local official. He says the bodies of all the victims have been recovered and buried.
