Mariah Carey checks into hospital for exhaustion

Singer Mariah Carey is recovering in hospital after checking herself in for "extreme exhaustion".

The 31-year-old is blaming the exhaustion on the pressure of work, her spokeswoman, Connie Filippello, said.

She said that Carey checked herself into hospital on Wednesday night.

The singer was in London last week to promote her new album but was believed to be in a hospital in New York, where she lives.

Last week she revealed she suffers from extreme insomnia.

"I generally only get around three hours a night. Relaxing is very hard for me," she said.

And the treatment comes as speculation grows that her three-year romance with Latino singer Luis Miguel is in trouble after reports of her being romantically linked to rapper Eminem.

Her single, Loverboy, is at number 12 in the charts and at number two in the US charts, this week, while she has been on a hectic programme to promote Glitter, the album which will be the soundtrack to the forthcoming film.

The film is set to be released in the US at the end of August, but no release date has been scheduled for the UK.

The film tells the story of a young girl who dreams of becoming a star and is based on Carey's own life story, while crime drama Wise Girls is due to be released next year.
