Fine Gael promises aid for house buyers

Fine Gael has pledged to introduce a bonus savings scheme for first-time house buyers if elected.

Fine Gael has pledged to introduce a bonus savings scheme for first-time house buyers if elected.

The One Euro for Three deposit plan, similar to the government's special savings scheme, is part of the main opposition party's efforts to tackle the housing crisis.

Under the plan, the State would give savers €1 for every €3 deposited. Mortgage interest relief will also be doubled to €10,000 per couple over five years.

To encourage renting as an alternative to buying, Fine Gael said it will introduce tax relief on rent.
