Floods brace insurance firms for unprecedented claims

It is feared insurance claims arising out of flood damage over recent days could soar to over €100m.

But it is likely to be around three weeks before the cost of the bad weather can be properly assessed.

Up to €98m was paid out following serious flooding that happened in August of last year - but this year's crisis is expected to cost even more.

Aidan Taheny, Marketing and Sales Manager at FBD Insurance, has said companies will be looking closely to see if weather like that of recent days pushes up the cost of cover generally.
