Seven people have been killed after two US Army Blackhawk helicopters crashed during a night exercise in Hawaii.

The accident happened on the north shore of Oahu, across the island from Honolulu.

An Army spokeswoman says there has been an incident involving two UH60 helicopters during the exercise above Kahuku.

The accident happened around 8pm on Monday, says Major Cynthia Teramae of the 25th Infantry Division, based at Scholfield Barracks.

Thirty helicopters were involved in ferrying nearly 1,000 soldiers from Wheeler Army Airfield to a base in Kahuku, according to an earlier Army advisory warning of possible noise disturbing residents.

It was part of the Army's Hawaii's Lightning Thrust Warrior exercise, which began on February 5
