Belfast engineering firm clinches slice of £690m hospital contract
A Belfast engineering company has won a slice of a £690m (€782) hospital building project in Birmingham, it was announced today.
Fin Engineering secured the contract to design, manufacture and deliver a state-of-the-art plant room for the Birmingham New Hospital PFI project, which, with more than 1,400 beds, is one of the largest healthcare development schemes ever undertaken in the UK.
The company won the contract, worth more than £500,000 (€566,000), following support from Invest NI and the Ulster Bank which provided a loan under the British government’s Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme.
Fin Engineering managing director Stephen Moore said the plant room was designed and manufactured in Belfast and will be installed on site in Birmingham in just three days.
“This is a very prestigious project for us given the scale of the development and the fact that this will be the most modern hospital in Europe,” said Mr Moore.
He added: “As a company, we have invested over the last number of years to enable us to take on projects of this nature, expanding both our workforce and our premises.
“The contract involves the design and co-ordination of all building services within the plant room, and the manufacture and assembly of six large plant room modules at our Saintfield Road facility.
“The modules are fitted with air handling units and associated mechanical and electrical services and are pre-tested prior to despatch to ensure they are defect-free. Once delivered to site, the modules are simply craned into position and hooked up.”
