The eviction of Big Brother's Adele gave the Channel 4 show its highest ratings of the series.
She was seen leaving amid a barrage of abuse and booing by 7.1 million viewers.
The show's figures were well up on the previous week, when Sophie's eviction pulled in 5.7 million viewers.
Earlier, six million people tuned in to Channel 4 to find out that Adele would be the next to leave, reports Media Guardian.
Big Brother's popularity helped the first episode in a new series of Friends achieve ratings of five million, beating One Foot In The Grave on BBC1 and equalling the five million for ITV1's Lads' Army.
The channel's viewing figures dropped to 3.5 million for the US sitcom Will And Grace at 9.30pm before soaring again for the 10pm instalment of Big Brother.
Earlier in the day, 4.6 million people tuned in to BBC1 to watch Tim Henman lose to the eventual Wimbledon champion, Lleyton Hewitt, in the semi-finals of the tournament.
