Detectives probing a dissident republican bombing campaign in Belfast tonight charged a man.

The 38-year-old suspect, from the Ligoniel area of the city, will appear before magistrates tomorrow.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said: “He has been charged with possession of an explosive device with intent to endanger life.”

It is understood his arrest is linked to the planting of incendiary blast bombs in the city centre.

Police foiled a dissident republican fire bomb attack last month after officers shot and wounded a man during a major surveillance operation on a car packed with explosives.

Chief Constable Hugh Orde has also warned of a big Christmas bomb threat from both the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA.
