Seven people have been placed under investigation for the alleged sexual abuse of 20 children in France, a state prosecutor said today.
In some cases, the children’s mothers allegedly took part in the abuse.
Three men and four women were put under investigation - one step short of being formally charged - for their involvement in the alleged abuse of the children, aged between two and 12, state prosecutor Marc Desert said.
‘‘The particularity of this affair rests with the number of victims, their youth and the role played by some mothers, who closed their eyes, let it happen, or even actively took part in sexual abuse on their own children,’’ he said.
The cases first came to light after one of the victims, a girl now in her late teens, told police that she had been sexually abused.
Following her account, police in the western town of Angers began an investigation that turned up the other cases. The investigation is continuing.
