A British schoolgirl is clinically dead after a sledging accident in the Austrian Alps.

Nasreen Jamalzadeh, 15, from London is on a life-support machine after suffering massive head injuries when she crashed into a tree.

She is now in a Salzburg hospital following the late-night accident at Fusch.

Her family are on their way to Austria but a police spokesman says Nasreen has been pronounced clinically dead.

Nasreen was on a sled with another girl on the toboggan run near Salzburg.

She lost control of the toboggan and hit her head on the tree, while going "very fast" said a spokesman for Club Europe, the tour operator. The other girl escaped with only minor injuries.

Nasreen's friend, named by police as 15-year-old Cathy Stroy, of Wimbledon, south west London, was sitting behind her on the sledge and broke her arm in the accident.

The sledging was part of a supervised activity for 80 pupils on the trip from the all-girls Ursuline High School in Merton, London. Nine teachers are accompanying the children.
