Brighton have named their little-known director of youth Martin Hinshelwood as their new first team boss.
Hinshelwood, who first arrived at the Seagulls in 1987, succeeds former England assistant coach Peter Taylor, who stunned the club by quitting just two weeks after leading them to the Division Two title in May.
The news is a surprising gamble by Brighton chairman Dick Knight, who asked Bristol City for permission to speak to Danny Wilson last week, only to be met with a point-blank refusal from the Robins.
Arsenal centre-back Tony Adams was also linked with the Withdean Stadium post, while ex-Crystal Palace and Brentford boss Steve Coppell was also favourite at one stage.
But Knight has promoted from within and rewarded Hinshelwood, who was caretaker manager for two games when Micky Adams quit last October, for his service to the club.
Hinshelwood told a Press conference at Brighton's Grand Hotel: "I got a phone call at 10.30am today asking me to meet Dick for lunch.
"It all happened very quickly - I've signed a two-year contract and I'll take this opportunity with both hands.
"I'm honoured to be manager as we go back into the First Division after a 10-year break.
"It's a big challenge but I feel we can cope at this level. I believe we have the squad to have a very good season."
