The Government’s specially appointed task force for the foot-and-mouth disease predicts that as many as forty thousand animals may have to be culled to prevent the disease from spreading from Co Louth.

The Government’s specially appointed task force for the foot-and-mouth disease predicts that as many as forty thousand animals may have to be culled to prevent the disease from spreading from Co Louth.

The committee held their first meeting today, which was chaired by the Taoiseach, since the disease was confirmed in Ireland.

The main topics that were discussed at the meeting were the possible extension of the slaughter zone in Louth and the effects the outbreak could have on the tourism industry.
